Archaeologists to sue Bagan management committee
The Myanmar Archaeology Association will sue the Bagan Management Committee for mismanagement of the Bagan heritage site in Mandalay Region, the association’s secretary has said.
The association will send a letter through a law firm to Nyaung U district court this week. The court will look into the accusations, and hearings on the matter are expected to take about two months, said U Thu Ra Aung, the association’s secretary.
“Our priority is to save our national heritage, Bagan, from mismanagement and to show that, in a democracy, there are checks and balances under the law,” he said.
The association on Tuesday held a press conference in Yangon about the implementation of projects and management policies in Bagan and to call for more transparency, responsibility and accountability.
Lawyer U Phoe Phyu, the association’s lawyer, said his law firm, Phoe Phu and Associates, is preparing to sue the committee, which is led by Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Zaw Myint Maung.
